Representatives of the European Commission confirmed to “Izvestia” that a biometric passport is not mandatory for traveling to the European Union. The introduction of the new Entry/Exit System (EES) does not imply automatic refusal of entry into the EU for individuals without this document. The decision on admission remains with the border services of each EU member state.

The planned launch of the EES is expected in the second half of the current year, but the specific date has not yet been determined, as reported by the European Commission. Information previously reported in the media about the system launching on October 6th has not been officially confirmed. Cyprus is also not fully prepared for the implementation of the platform due to unfulfilled technical requirements. Ireland is the only country that has officially refused to use the system.

The Entry/Exit System will register traveler data when crossing EU borders. This includes information from travel documents, personal data, and details about the purpose, location, and duration of the trip. Biometric data, such as photographs and fingerprints, will be required upon first entry and stored in the database for three years before being deleted.

It is important to note that the presence of a biometric passport is necessary to use the Entry/Exit System. However, its absence does not imply automatic refusal of entry into the European Union, as emphasized by the European Commission.
