In 2022, over 48 thousand people obtained Belgian citizenship, which is 24% more than in 2021, but still did not reach the record value of the 21st century, according to the federal migration center Myria.
Three-quarters of new Belgian citizens come from non-EU countries (36,233 people). Among them, Moroccans predominate (10%, or 4,842 people), followed by Syrians (3,615 people), Iraqis (2,001 people), and Afghans (1,979 people). Also impressive is the increase in the number of Turks who obtained Belgian citizenship (1,797 people); this is a record since the revision of the citizenship code.
EU member states supplied Belgium with 12,249 new citizens. Romania leads here (as well as in Cyprus) – 2,791 people; followed by Poland (1,727 people), Italy (1,536 people), and the Netherlands (1,433 people).
In light of the new naturalization requirements in Cyprus, the position of the Constitutional Court in Belgium is interesting, which demanded that the Belgian federal government change the naturalization requirements for illiterate individuals when taking a written exam for citizenship purposes.
In 2002, Belgium denounced the Strasbourg Convention “On the Reduction of Cases of Multiple Nationality and Military Duty in Such Cases” of 1963; after which, interest in Belgian citizenship increased due to the possibility of retaining other citizenships.
