Ending Unemployment Benefits for US Millionaires
In the United States, there is a desire to stop paying unemployment benefits to millionaires (yes, they have been receiving them all this time). Such a bill was introduced by a bipartisan group of lawmakers, including representatives from both houses of the US Congress, Fox News reports. They propose to prohibit people earning over $1 million a year from receiving federal assistance, even after losing their jobs.
One of the authors of the bill, a member of the House of Representatives from Utah, John Curtis, explained: due to the peculiarities of the rules for granting unemployment benefits, attention is paid only to a person’s active income, completely ignoring passive income.
“Data from the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS) show that thousands are using this to receive benefits,” emphasized the Republican. “It’s shameful that this bill is even necessary. Millionaires shouldn’t be receiving unemployment benefits at taxpayers’ expense.”
In the office of another author of the document — Senator Joni Ernst from Iowa — it was revealed that millionaires received over $200 million in unemployment benefits last year thanks to this loophole.
“I came to Washington to fight for working families, not fat cats looking for loopholes to fill their pockets,” added Democratic Senator John Tester from Montana. “This bipartisan bill will cut wasteful spending and put money back in the pockets of hardworking Montanans, where it belongs.”
