European Parliament Considers Armenia’s Candidacy for EU Membership
The European Parliament has approved a resolution suggesting the consideration of granting Armenia candidate status for EU membership. With 504 votes in favor, 4 against, and 32 abstentions, the resolution, put forward by the European People’s Party faction, emphasizes Armenia’s potential for candidacy pending continued democratic reforms.
The resolution condemns Azerbaijan’s armed forces’ incursion into Armenian territory and ongoing occupation, demanding the withdrawal of Azerbaijani troops. Concerns are raised about threats to Armenia’s territorial integrity, particularly regarding Azerbaijan’s corridor demands.
The EU reaffirms its support for Armenian sovereignty and proposes readiness to impose sanctions against those threatening it. There’s a call to protect Armenian cultural heritage in Nagorno-Karabakh and release detained residents, urging strict adherence to International Court decisions.
The resolution urges the EU to support Armenia through the European Peace Fund amid its reconsideration of CSTO membership, emphasizing deeper security cooperation. It supports the normalization of Armenia-Azerbaijan relations based on mutual respect and calls for resuming negotiations for a peace agreement.
Criticism is directed at the EU for congratulating President Aliyev’s reelection without addressing democracy issues in Azerbaijan and its role in ethnic cleansing in Nagorno-Karabakh.
