Government Explores Data Scraping from Social Media in Aggressive Fight Against Tax Evasion

Deputy Economy Minister Maurizio Leo revealed on Wednesday that the government is exploring the use of data scraping from social media platforms to combat tax evasion. Leo emphasized the ongoing collaboration with the Inland Revenue Agency (l’Agenzia delle Entrate) and the public IT agency Sogei in implementing “data scraping.” This involves analyzing the standard-of-living data shared by professionals and entrepreneurs on social networks to assess its compatibility with their tax declarations.

Leo highlighted the importance of working closely with the privacy authority, stating that discussions have already commenced, and the authority is willing to cooperate, provided that personal data protection remains a top priority. He underscored the fundamental role of collaboration with the privacy authority in addressing the significant impact of tax evasion on society, comparing it to the weight of terrorism, and urged collective cooperation to tackle this issue.
