Mandatory State Language Proficiency for Residency in Andorra

Andorra has proposed changes to the requirements for obtaining and renewing residency permits, legislatively establishing mandatory knowledge of the state language. According to the new rules, candidates for residency in Andorra will be required to demonstrate knowledge of the Catalan language at level A1. For the renewal of residency permits, reaching level A2 proficiency in the language is required.

Catalan is the official language of Andorra, and the introduction of this language requirement confirms the government’s desire to preserve and promote the country’s cultural heritage. This step also strengthens the social integration of new residents by encouraging their active participation in public life.

This precedent is part of a general trend in Europe, where many countries are introducing or tightening language requirements for naturalization and residency permits. Such measures are aimed at ensuring better integration of immigrants and fostering a multilingual society, as well as preserving linguistic diversity.
