Portugal is discontinuing the repatriation program for Sephardic Jews
The proposed law, having undergone the first reading with opposition amendments, foresees the conclusion of the simplified procedure for obtaining Portuguese citizenship for Sephardic Jews with local roots, introduced in 2013, effective January 1, 2024.
The Minister of Justice explained that, despite the fairness of the regime existing for 10 years, the government believes its objective has been achieved.
Parliamentary opposition criticizes the initiative but proposes different positions. Liberals suggest extending the regime for another year.
According to official information, by the end of last year, over 262,000 individuals applied for repatriation, and around 75,000 have already received approval.
All submitted applications will be processed according to the rules in effect at the time of submission.
