Romanian Citizenship Law Amendments: Language Requirement Increase

The Ministry of Justice of Romania has put forward for discussion amendments to the Romanian citizenship law aimed at increasing language proficiency requirements for citizenship restoration based on heritage.
Minister of Justice Alina Gorgiu noted that the proposed changes are an important step towards Romania’s accession to the visa waiver program with the United States. She emphasized the need to eliminate the risks of illegal acquisition of Romanian citizenship, noting that many documents submitted in the citizenship restoration process have proven to be unreliable. The new proposals establish requirements and procedures for the provision or restoration of citizenship.
Gorgiu also highlighted Romania’s need for a simple, predictable, and stable regulatory framework, especially in the field of citizenship.
Below are the main proposed changes:
- Increasing language proficiency requirements for citizenship restoration based on heritage.
- Tightening procedures and requirements for the provision and restoration of citizenship.
- Establishing clearer criteria for documents required for citizenship restoration.
- Ensuring transparency and reliability in the process of providing and restoring citizenship.
These changes are proposed to ensure a more effective and secure process of providing and restoring Romanian citizenship.
